Concerns on Hot Water Heater Cover

I’ve moved from my previous residence about 5 months ago, give or take, and I am still having certain symptoms of living in a mold filled environment. We rented a home for 2 years, and although we moved (certified mold-free, thanks to a state-licensed inspector ;D ), I continue to cough up brownish black sputum on a regular basis, and it feels as if my chronic bronchitis and asthma has worsened. I’m no longer having migraines, or coughing up small bloody chunks, and the itchy/watery feeling in my eyes is gone. But I’ve just learned from the new landlord, who only just recently took over management of the mobile home park we lived in, that VERY extensive remodeling had to be done on the single-wide which we we used to live in. Where our bedroom was (as well as where our hot water tank was, in our closet of all places) and the bathroom, behind the walls there was severe black mold growth due to an undetected slow leak in said water heater. It was so bad that literally all of the flooring and walls had to be completely replaced. I suppose the lack of insulation in our home (which we found out about after we had signed our lease) may have also had some effect on it, as the area where we live in Northeastern Georgia is rather humid for the majority of the year. Not sure, though. We complained numerous times about the mildew smell, the small strange blackish streaks appearing in the corners of our walls, and even showed the landlord at the time AND his maintenance man that things in our closet were deteriorating because they were covered in weird looking fuzz! They told us there was nothing to worry about, that the black streaks were “dirt, because you must not be not dusting regularly,” and that the deterioration of a collector’s item doll still in the box, a canvas bookbag and accompanying folders and papers, and a few articles of clothing was “normal because there’s a hot water tank behind a panel in the closet wall and a certain level of moisture is inevitable.” We moved despite being stuck in a lease once we discovered I was 4 months pregnant with our first child. As I am still having side effects, to the point where I’m concerned enough to go to a doctor and get checked out, I was curious if I could find the former landlord and sue for deception and neglect of his property at the time, as potential medical bills could be costly. The new landlord said that she would wholeheartedly back me up as a credible witness and offer pictorial evidence if I were to attempt to take him to court, but I would like to know if I would just be wasting my time if I tried, seeing as how he is no longer owner of the property. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, please and thank you :)
